The story of Nelson Farm begins in the late 1890s, when Mr. and Mrs. Bob Montague homesteaded the land and established the Montague Dairy. As the years passed, ownership changed hands and the small dairy was renamed the Nelson Dairy, blossoming into a thriving operation with as many as 120 cows by the 1930s. The farm’s historic structures—dating back to the early 1900s, with a charming log cabin added in the 1970s—stand as living reminders of its rich agricultural past. Though the dairy business declined and eventually closed in the 1940s, relics of its heyday, including fascinating old machinery once used on the pastures and hay fields, still dot the landscape, sparking curiosity and wonder in visitors of all ages.
Nelson Farm is more than a nod to the past—it’s a champion for nature’s future. By connecting people to the land through hands-on gardening, educational programs, and celebrations of local agriculture and wildlife, the farm inspires stewardship and a love for the outdoors. Every event and activity at Nelson Farm helps nurture a sense of responsibility for the land, ensuring Suncadia’s natural beauty is protected and cherished for generations.
