Moss is one of the oldest types of plants on Earth. 

 

Unlike most plants, moss doesn’t need deep roots. It absorbs moisture directly from the air and can grow on rocks, logs, soil, and tree bark. 

 

Moss acts like a tiny sponge, helping forests stay moist while creating homes for insects and other small creatures. 

 

Some moss beds are decades old.
